Report for Business Demographics
What they really mean for individuals and their businesses?
Thursday 22nd June 2006
On Thursday 22nd June over 30 members and non members came together at Aberdeen Football Club to hear
Melfort Campbell give a presentation on Business Demographics.
Melfort Campbell is one of Scotland's most eloquent and controversial speakers. He is passionate about the promotion of Scotland's business community, and has special interest in the dynamics of the North Sea. Melfort is currently Chairman of the CBI in Scotland; a post which he has taken on with relish and which gives him fantastic insight into how government supports UK business. He is also Chairman and Chief Executive of the Aberdeen-based Imes Group, which during the last 20 years has evolved into an innovative, entrepreneurial and diversified Group. He is a broadly focussed entrepreneur with a clear value system and family attitude to his business and staff and was awarded an OBE in the 2003 New Year's Honours List for services to industry in Scotland.
The morning started with some light networking. People soon took their seats to hear, Rikki Griffiths - Head of Scotland, Barclays Bank give a brief introduction to Melfort and then handed over to Melfort himself. Melfort spoke about successful people running successful businesses succeeding everyday. ‘He also spoke about Scotland failing to achieve in world rankings on competitiveness, productivity, growth, R & D, commercialisation and academic output and achievement’. He then talked about the link between these and in the context of the N. E. Scotland economy. He finished by explaining what the difference is between what business needs and what Government intends to do and why the difference exists.
Following what was definitely a thought provoking presentation came a lively debate. Many questions were raised which Melfort answered thoroughly. The presentation was followed by a networking lunch which took on a new format. Instead of having a seated lunch, a hot and cold finger buffet was offered. This allowed people to stand and afforded more networking opportunities. It is hoped this presentation will become an annual event.
