The UK's National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) have been granted the development of the Eastern Green Link 2 project. The initiative is a 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link between Scotland and England.
All necessary planning permits have been acquired by the developers, including the ones related to the project's offshore elements. The assessment of Eastern Green Link 2 was carried out by three local planning authorities, England's Marine Management Organisation and Scotland's Marine.
Once fully installed, the 525kW underwater transmission line will be the UK's longest HVDC cable, reaching almost 436km in length.
Construction is expected to start next year, with operations scheduled for 2029.
