New market opportunities

Spain has emerged as one of Europe’s most dynamic renewable energy markets, underpinned by favourable climate conditions, supportive government policies, and a strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions. With abundant solar irradiance and robust wind resources, the country has built one of the largest pipelines of renewable projects in the region, with solar and wind at the forefront. Investment in large-scale solar has surged, significantly reducing costs and positioning Spain among the most competitive solar energy markets in Europe. Offshore wind is also gaining momentum, supported by new regulatory frameworks that seek to unlock its potential in coastal regions. In parallel, Spain is investing heavily in green hydrogen, with flagship projects such as the 2GW Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and the development of the Spain Hydrogen Backbone. Together with cross-border connections through the H2Med initiative, Spain is reinforcing its role as both a domestic leader and a key player in the European and global renewable energy transition.

Portugal is equally positioning itself as a notable leader in renewable energy within Europe. Alongside significant growth in solar power—driven by falling technology costs, government incentives, and favourable natural conditions—the country is investing in innovative solutions such as floating solar and advanced energy storage. Portugal’s clear regulatory framework, long-term energy strategy, and integration with Spain and the wider European grid further strengthen its position. The 100MW Sines Refinery Green Hydrogen Project, already under construction, illustrates Portugal’s ambition to scale up hydrogen production, while the development of the CelZa Hydrogen Pipeline will integrate the country into the wider European hydrogen network.
