Mozambique has gained traction through its project activity in the oil and gas market, with aspirations to become a major liquified natural gas (LNG) exporter. Most recent years have shown the IOCs’ appetite for exploring the African nation's gas potential, which is estimated to be 100tcf. Majors to mention, with extensive presence in the country, ExxonMobil, Eni and TotalEnergies are most responsible for project developments. EICDataStream currently tracks US$71.5 billion worth of oil and gas opportunities across the upstream and midstream sectors - 62% of which are associated with LNG. Mozambique is home to one of the largest proposed LNG developments on the continent, such as TotalEnergies Mozambique LNG project, with a total expected capacity of approximately 12.8mtpa. The project most recently restarted activities following a period under force majeure status.
With security now in place, the country presents active near-term opportunities for the supply chain industry. Alongside the LNG import terminals, sanctioned FLNG developments like Eni’s Coral North (Norte) development also opens opportunities for supply. Opportunities in Mozambique’s energy sector are not limited to LNG. Renewable energy, particularly solar and hydroelectric, is also a promising segment, with a future expected capacity of 17.6GW. After years of setbacks caused by attacks on facilities and delays in government licensing agreements, Mozambique is resuming project progression and gaining momentum, appearing to be back on track to becoming a stable energy producer.
