India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has officially granted permission for the First Pour of Concrete (FPC) at units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant in Karnataka. The approval, issued on February 24, signifies the official commencement of construction for the two 700 MWe indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) developed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).
With site excavation now complete, preparatory activities for the FPC are actively underway. The project's supply chain is already moving quickly; Larsen & Toubro has dispatched four of the eight required steam generators, and Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) is executing the massive $1.5 billion (INR 12,800 crore) EPC contract awarded last year. These new Kaiga units are a critical component of India's "fleet mode" construction strategy to rapidly scale its nuclear capacity.
