The Swedish government has authorised two offshore wind projects within its exclusive economic zone, alongside an onshore facility in Markbygden. The approved marine developments—Fyrskeppet in the southern Bothnian Sea and Vidar in the northern Skagerrak—could collectively generate 19TWh of renewable electricity annually.
Skyborn Renewables' 1,400MW Fyrskeppet project will feature up to 93 turbines located 54km east of Söderhamn. Meanwhile, the Vidar development will comprise up to 75 turbines situated 35km southwest of Strömstad. Under their permit conditions, both offshore assets must achieve commercial operations no later than 2036.
Concurrently, authorities rejected 11 other offshore applications, citing unacceptable impacts on national defence capabilities. Moving forward, Sweden will replace its open-door application framework with a centralised auction system for future seabed leasing rights.
