A Word From Our Regional Director | EIC North and Central America

On behalf of everyone at the EIC (Energy Industries Council), I am honoured to welcome you to the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2022. This year is unlike any other; 2022 marks the return of OTC and the UK Pavilion after two years of postponement. Following COVID-19, virtual and hybrid conferences took the world by storm and provided an alternative method to connect and conduct business. Although virtual communication is more prevalent than ever, the appetite for face-to-face meetings has not subsided. With over 1,000 companies exhibiting this year, OTC is well positioned to facilitate fruitful, in-person engagement and encourage long-term strategic relationships to advance the offshore industry.

With over 20 years’ of experience in managing and organizing the UK Pavilion at OTC, the EIC welcomes twenty-two exhibitors - many of which are EIC members - that bring unparalleled innovation and technical knowledge to the offshore industry. EIC membership provides companies with access to our CAPEX projects and OPEX facilities databases - EICDataStream and EICAssetMap; insight from our expert analysts; and comprehensive market insight reports. Members also receive discounted rates to attend and/or sponsor our flagship meet-the-buyer conference - EIC Connect - and other regional events and webinars. The EIC also helps members to mitigate some of the risk of diversifying into new markets via use of EIC’s global office facilities and launchpad services. Please be sure to speak to a member of the EIC staff to provide you with more information on how you can join the EIC community.

That said, we know these past two years have not been easy to navigate socially, economically, or politically. As the world places greater emphasis on energy security following the invasion of Ukraine, it has also renewed its focus on the oil and gas market. Sanctions on Russia created an urgency for oil producers to increase output to meet demand and a scramble for major oil importers to secure additional supplies. Meanwhile, drilling activity increases as oil prices march upwards and key E&P offshore projects across the globe move closer to final investment decision (FID).

Global trends are mirrored in the Americas; O&G activity is ramping-up from offshore Newfoundland & Labrador to the Santos Basin offshore Brazil. While South America remains focused on Petrobras’ pre-salt projects and the string of discoveries by ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies in Guyana and Suriname, the North American market is equally active. There are nearly 100 offshore E&P projects in the region, representing an investment of US$126 billion in the coming years. O&G activity in the Gulf of Mexico remains pivotal and IOCs - such as Chevron, Equinor and Shell - are progressing capital-intensive field development projects, exploration, and appraisal work.

Beyond oil and gas, oil majors have also focused on emerging energy segments - such as offshore wind and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Equinor and bp are developing the 2GW Empire Wind offshore wind farm off the coast of New York. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil is championing a US$100 million CCS initiative in Houston Ship Channel with the aim of capturing 100 million tonnes per annum of CO2.

Despite the many challenges in recent years, business must move forward. With that, technology and innovation must follow. OTC 2022 and the UK Pavilion will provide all of us here today with the opportunity to play a role in this progression.

I hope everyone here takes the opportunity to speak with companies exhibiting at the UK pavilion to learn about the technologies, products and services that can contribute to your future and ongoing projects.

Amanda Duhon
Regional Director | EIC North and Central America
