Sonatrach awards US$3.7bn Algeria refinery contract
14 January, 2020
Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach has awarded a US$3.7bn contract for its planned new refinery to a joint venture of Samsung Engineering and Técnicas Reunidas.
Under the lump-sum turnkey contract, the two firms will provide engineering, procurement, construction and project management for the Hassi Messaoud refinery project.
The refinery, located approximately 373 miles southeast of Algiers, will have a processing capacity of 110,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Algeria, despite being a crude exporter, lacks the capability to meet internal demand for refined oil products.
The Hassi Messaoud project, once operational in 2024, will produce propane, butane, 95 gasoline, 91 gasoline, kerosene, diesel and bitumen.
