The Energía del Pacífico (EDP) LNG-to-power project in Port of Acajutla, El Salvador, is now commercially operational, according to developer and owner Invenergy. EDP, whose power production capacity is equivalent to 30% of El Salvador’s demands, is the country’s largest ever private foreign direct investment.
The 380MW natural gas-fired power plant will generate electricity while avoiding the emissions of approximately 600,000 tons of CO2 anually – a significant move considering El Salvador’s strong dependence of diesel and heavy fuel oil-generation.
Besides the facility, the EDP project also consisted of the construction of a permanently morred floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), a 2km pipeline linking the two and two 230kV transmission lines.
Total investment for the execution of this initiative is calculated at over US$1bn.
