Energias de Portugal (EDP) has set Alqueva’s start-up to July 2022. The project is a 5MW floating photovoltaic plant which will be installed on the Alqueva Dam, in Portugal’s Beja district.
The Alqueva PV plant will feature over 12,000 panel and require an investment of approximately €4m (US$4.2m).
The facility will have an annual power production of 7.5GWHh, enough to supply more than 25% of homes in the regions of Portel and Moura. A lithium battery system of 2GWh is also being planned by EDP.
Alqueva acquired a construction permit in May 2021 and is the largest European solar park to be installed at a hydro dam. Further expansions of capacity are considered by the developer.
