Corporation Commission for approval to construct the 2.6GW Virginia Coastal Offshore Wind Power (CVOW) project.
According to the business, CVOW is the largest offshore wind project in the United States, with a total investment of US$9.8bn. It is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
The project will create enough clean energy to power over 660,000 households.
The filing follows the opening of the first offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing in the United States, at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.
Dominion Energy further stated that the filing is supported by its investment in the only US-flagged offshore wind turbine installation vessel.
During its operation, the project is expected to create 1,100 jobs, generate approximately US$11m in local and state taxes each year, and provide economic benefits worth US$210m.
