RWE has broken ground on Germany’s largest battery energy storage facility at the Gundremmingen energy site in Bavaria.
The €230m project will provide 400MW of power and 700MWh of storage capacity, using the existing grid connection from the former nuclear plant now being decommissioned.
The company said the facility will be capable of supplying electricity continuously for almost two hours, with more than 200 containers housing 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells and 100 ultra-fast inverters to enable near-instant response to grid fluctuations.
Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in early 2028.
Markus Söder, Bavarian minister-president, said: “Gundremmingen remains a key location in the Bavarian energy supply. With an output of 400MW and a capacity of over 700MWh, the battery storage facility will stabilise the grid when there is no wind or sunlight.”
Markus Krebber, RWE chief executive, said: “The energy system of the future requires powerful storage facilities. By building Germany’s largest battery storage facility in Bavaria, we are sending a strong signal.”
RWE currently operates 1.2GW of battery capacity across the US, Europe and Australia, with a further 2.7GW under construction. The company plans to expand its global storage portfolio significantly as part of its energy transition strategy.
