The first planning consent to a hydrogen-to-power initiative in the UK has been granted to the Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder project. To be built in East Yorkshire, it is jointly developed by SSE and Equinor.
The Aldbrough project will involve production of green hydrogen utilising a 35MW electrolyser. The hydrogen produced will be stored in a converted salt cavern and then used in a hydrogen-fired open cycle gas turbine (OCGT), offering flexible green power when demand is high.
Aldbrough Hydrogen Pathfinder is part of the Humber Hydrogen Hub, a larger scheme to concentrate hydrogen production, storage and power generation in one location, of which Centrica is also part.
