The oil and gas industry is undergoing a structural transformation in its operational priorities. Environmental safety is no longer a peripheral regulatory requirement but has become an essential competitive differentiator.

Companies committed to environmental compliance, carbon footprint reduction, and responsible resource management establish themselves as sustainable leaders, growing competitively and attracting conscious investors in a global scenario that increasingly demands "advantageous barrels" — volumes of oil and gas whose extraction is highly profitable, low in operational cost, low in carbon intensity, and with less environmental impact.

Veolia supports this transformation with technological solutions for water, oil, and gas processes that protect infrastructure, ensure reservoir performance, and increase ultimate recovery. Veolia's state-of-the-art membrane technology treatment systems facilitate this transition by offering solutions that simultaneously optimize deployment and operational costs, lower energy consumption, and reduce environmental impact.

Veolia's three-layer technologies break the historical paradigm of filtration

Conventional membrane filtration presents significant structural limitations. Two-layer membranes, composed of a thin polyamide film over a polysulfone base, represent the sector’s traditional configuration, but face operational challenges inherent to their architecture. Efficient management of these systems requires constant balancing between operating pressure, cleaning frequency, and permeate quality, resulting in trade-offs that impact both operational costs and environmental performance.
The innovation of a third layer in Veolia’s filtration membranes breaks this established paradigm. This unique intermediate layer, fused into the polysulfone, alters the dynamics of fouling and flow. The resulting surface’s flatter topography, compared to conventional membranes, represents an apparently small change on the nanometric scale that produces significant effects on the operational scale.
The practical results include reduced fouling, less contaminant buildup, and more consistent flow, redefining the operational limits that have governed membrane filtration for generations. Complementing this innovation, Veolia has developed new advanced reverse osmosis technologies: Low Energy Reverse Osmosis (LE) for offshore operations focusing on energy efficiency, and High Rejection Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) for critical applications demanding maximum water purity.

Operational Benefits: A Virtuous Cycle of Input Reduction

The reduction of fouling triggers a sequence of operational consequences that mutually amplify each other. Less fouling means less frequent cleanings are required. Fewer cleanings imply lower consumption of cleaning chemicals. Less exposure to aggressive chemicals prolongs membrane lifespan. Optimized operation reduces the required differential pressure, resulting in energy savings.
This cycle is not merely additive, it is multiplicative. Each step amplifies the benefits of the previous one, creating a compound effect that simultaneously impacts operational costs, resource consumption, and environmental impact.

Applications in the Oil and Gas Sector
The applications of this technology are diverse:
● Injection Water: The quality of the water is crucial to avoid scaling in wells and to maintain productivity.
● Produced Water: Treating one of the largest volumes of effluent in offshore operations benefits from reduced fouling, allowing for more consistent operation.
● Desalination: Energy efficiency becomes critical for economic viability on platforms without access to fresh water.
● Nanofiltration for Sulfate Removal: Specialized application where ionic selectivity is as important as flow.

Less membrane cleaning, higher environmental performance
In addition to operational and economic considerations, reducing cleaning frequency has significant implications for occupational safety. The chemicals used in membrane cleaning pose exposure risks for operators on platforms. A drastic reduction in fouling proportionally reduces this exposure to hazardous substances.
From an environmental standpoint, fewer cleanings mean a lower volume of cleaning effluents, reducing the load of discarded contaminants and implications for regulatory compliance and impact on marine ecosystems adjacent to offshore operations.
Veolia's innovation enables resilient operations.
The evolution of Veolia's membrane filtration technologies represents a fundamental transformation in the operational dynamics of water treatment in the oil and gas sector. By breaking the historical trade-off between flow and rejection, these membranes create new possibilities that simultaneously impact efficiency, costs, occupational safety, and environmental impact.
Veolia's technological innovation is just one part of a complete support ecosystem through sizing software, specialized laboratories, and “on-board” or remote assistance services. This integration between cutting-edge technology and robust operational support ensures that operators not only implement innovative solutions but also continually optimize them.
As environmental regulations intensify and pressures for decarbonization increase, these technologies will likely become necessary for operational viability. Environmental safety, therefore, is not an additional cost but an investment in more resilient, compliant, and sustainable operations.
