Diavik Diamond Mine, owned by Rio Tinto, is planning to build Canada's largest solar power plant to date. The project will install more than 6,600 solar panels in northern Canada, producing about 4,200MWh per year.
The facility will meet up to 25% of Diavik's electricity needs as it prepares to close in 2029. The company expects the solar farm to avoid approximately 2,900 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Construction works are expected to start in the next weeks, reaching commercial operation in 2024.
