Construction works have commenced for the NeuConnect interconnector project, which will install a 1.4GW bidirectional interconnector between the Isle of Grain, UK, and Conneforde, Germany. Once complete, NeuConnect will feature 720km of HVDC cables plus two converter stations and AC connection works in the UK and Germany.
The initiative is developed by NeuConnect Britain and has reached financial close in July 2022. Investors include Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power, and TEPCO.
Prysmian Group and Siemens Energy, as main contractors, are the companies leading construction works. Prysmian has begun horizontal directional drilling (HDD) on the Isle of Grain site, which will allow the subsea cables to be brought ashore, while Siemens Energy has begun work on attenuation ponds and the construction of a main access road that will connect to the new electricity converter station, whose construction will begin next year.
In addition to onshore work, pre-installation offshore surveying is underway to prepare the route for the installation of subsea cables. The initial phase of subsea cable installation will commence in 2024.
