BP has announced a green hydrogen plant to be installed at its Castellón refinery in the region of Valencia, Spain. Called HyVal, the 2GW facility will enter operations until by 2030 and will require an estimated investment of €2bn.
HyVal will be developed in phases, of which the first will cover 200MW of the total electrolysis capacity. This phase should be complete by 2027.
The plant is expected to produce up to 31,200 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, which are planned to be used as feedstock for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Over 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions will be avoided by the facility’s production.
