Shell and Eneco, through joint venture CrossWind, have contracted Ballard Power Systems for the provision of a fuel cell system to be used in the Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) project in the Netherlands.
Using water electrolysis, the facility will consist of a 759MW offshore wind farm which will power Dutch homes and enable the offshore production of green hydrogen for energy storage.
Ballard will deliver the fuel cell power solution in 2024. After installation and start of operations, the device is expected to work with 1MW of peak power capacity.
The HKN project will also feature floating solar panels for additional power generation.
