The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County, California has been granted by the US Department of Energy (DOE) a funding of up to US$1.1bn. This award will allow the facility to avoid its closure.
The amount will be conceded through the Civil Nuclear Credit (CNC) Programme, which aims to support continual operations of nuclear power assets. Diablo Canyon’s two units have previously been set for decommissioning in 2024 and 2025.
The plant, which is owned by Pacific Gas and Electric and maintained by over 1,500 workers, has an approximate annual output of 16GWh.
