Samia Suluhu Hassan and William Ruto, presidents of Tanzania and Kenya, respectively, have decided to move forward with a 600km natural gas pipeline connecting the two countries.
Negotiations related to the project took place during Ruto’s recent visit to Tanzania. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for development of the pipeline was also signed in May last year, but construction phase has not yet begun.
The pipeline will run from Dar es Salaam to Mombasa, importing gas to Kenya from the Mtwara plant in Tanzania.
According to market sources, the Tanzania-Kenya gas pipeline will require an investment of US$1.1bn. Funding will come from a public private partnership (PPP), with no date defined for start of operations yet.
