Avangrid Renewables, an Iberdrola subsidiary, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have begun construction of the 800MW Vineyard Wind 1 project, which is the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the United States.
Construction began after their joint venture, Vineyard Wind, achieved financial close in September 2021. The project is expected to offset more than 1.6m tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
The offshore wind project, located 24km off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, will provide power to over 400,000 homes and businesses in the US state.
The project will be equipped with 62 13MW Haliade-X wind turbines from General Electric (GE).
The turbines will be connected to an offshore substation, from where the electricity will be transferred to two outlet cables, which will land on Covell's beach before connecting to the grid of the onshore substation.
The Vineyard Wind 1 project will create 3,600 jobs and is set to begin operations in 2023.
