Bruce Power has initiated the major component replacement outage for Unit 5 at its Ontario nuclear facility. Commencing on 1 November, this milestone marks the fourth reactor to undergo refurbishment as part of a privately funded life-extension programme.
The comprehensive work scope involves replacing critical infrastructure, including 480 calandria tubes, 960 feeder tubes and multiple steam generators. This extensive overhaul will extend the reactor's operational lifespan by 30 to 35 years.
The broader site renewal campaign will ultimately refurbish six units, securing a long-term supply of clean electricity and medical isotopes. Units 6 and 3 have already returned to service, while Unit 4 continues its ongoing upgrade. Representing a significant economic driver, the overall programme sustains 22,000 jobs and generates CAD4bn in annual benefits.
