Italian cable manufacturer Prysmian has partnered with mining group Rio Tinto to deliver electrical cables manufactured from low-carbon aluminium for a new Amazon data centre located near Columbus, Ohio.
The electrical infrastructure will utilise proprietary ELYSIS inert-anode smelting technology. This industrial process eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional smelting by releasing pure oxygen instead of carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons. Fabricated at Prysmian's Sedalia facility in Missouri, the raw materials are sourced from Rio Tinto's hydropower-backed operations in Quebec, Canada.
Representing the first known application of this inert-anode aluminium within the digital infrastructure sector, the agreement directly supports Amazon Web Services’ ambition to achieve net-zero operations by 2040. This supply chain collaboration, supported by distributor Wesco, highlights the growing integration of decarbonised raw materials into critical facilities.
