A consortium led by Bechtel UK Holdings International and Turkey's ENKA is the sole qualified bidder for the next phase of Serbia's Iron Gate III reversible hydropower plant. Following a public call to US companies, the Ministry of Mining and Energy confirmed the group met all necessary engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) criteria.
Located on the Danube river, the Đerdap 3 pumped storage facility is vital for regional grid stability. With an estimated investment exceeding €2.63bn, the development could become Europe's largest battery storage system.
While five other participants failed to qualify, Bechtel will advance to the second selection stage. Concurrently, the Serbian government launched a €5.3m tender to prepare technical documentation for the upcoming front end engineering and design (FEED) phase.
