Amsterdam-based independent power producer (IPP) MPC Energy Solutions has initiated the testing and commissioning phase for its 66.1MW San Patricio solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Guatemala.
Having secured the final permits, the testing period is expected to conclude within two weeks. Consequently, the commercial operation date (COD) has been revised to July 2026, pushing back the original timeline. Before officially reaching COD, the firm intends to sell the electricity generated during this preliminary phase on the local spot market.
To mitigate the impact of the delay, the company injected an additional US$1.5m to cover extended operational and debt service costs. However, it expects to recover the majority of this capital through the impending sale of the asset. Reaching commercial operations remains a critical milestone for finalising the transaction, which includes the divestment of a broader regional portfolio to an undisclosed buyer.
