Swedish nuclear technology developer Blykalla has formally applied to the government to construct a new power plant in Norrsundet, Gävle. The proposed facility will feature six of the company’s proprietary SEALER (Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor) small modular reactors (SMRs), delivering a combined baseload capacity of 330MW.
Positioned strategically between two key bidding zones, the east-central Swedish site was selected for its existing port infrastructure and industrial heritage. Subject to securing the necessary environmental permits and reaching a final investment decision, the commercial-scale plant is targeted to begin operations in the early 2030s.
The application represents a significant milestone in Sweden’s broader nuclear renaissance, supported by recent legislative reforms designed to accelerate the deployment of fossil-free electricity. Authorities will now commence a comprehensive review process to assess the project’s feasibility and safety frameworks.
