ScottishPower, Iberdrola's UK subsidiary, and Masdar have successfully installed the first turbine at the £4bn (US$5.4bn) East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm off the Suffolk coast. The milestone establishes a new UK record, featuring 115-metre blades—the largest ever manufactured and installed in British waters, surpassing the previous 108-metre benchmark.
The 1.4GW development will comprise 95 Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines, each standing 262 metres tall with a 236-metre rotor diameter. All 285 blades are being produced domestically at Siemens Gamesa’s facility in Hull. Offshore installation is currently being executed by Cadeler’s Wind Osprey jack-up vessel, with the Wind Pace scheduled to join the campaign as work progresses.
Once fully operational, East Anglia THREE will be capable of generating enough electricity to power more than 1.3 million homes. The project represents a major investment in the regional supply chain, supporting thousands of jobs during the construction phase and establishing over a hundred long-term roles in the East of England.
