Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) has formalised a milestone agreement with Rolls-Royce SMR to commence the design and delivery of the UK's first small modular reactors (SMRs). Backed by an allocation of £2.6bn from the 2025 Spending Review, alongside a new £599m facility from the National Wealth Fund, the two-stage contract paves the way for three initial units at the Wylfa site in North Wales.
The partnership immediately triggers site-specific design activities, regulatory engagement and the procurement of critical long-lead components across the supply chain. Targeting a final investment decision (FID) in 2029, the Wylfa development is expected to generate at least 1.4GW of stable, low-carbon power, marking a definitive step in the country's clean energy transition and securing a massive long-term pipeline for domestic manufacturing.
