Turkey’s state energy company Tpao has announced the discovery of 135bn cubic metres of gas at the Amasra-1 offshore well in the Black Sea.
The announcements were made by Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the coastal city of Zonguldak, with the latest find bringing the total amount of deposits discovered to 540bn cubic metres.
Tpao intends to solely develop the deposits without foreign financings, with plans to start production in 2023.
Turkish exploration firms last year found 405bn cubic meters of gas at the nearby Tuna-1 well in Sakarya field, the biggest ever discovery in the Black Sea.
The country currently imports almost all of the 50bn cubic metres of gas it consumes each year, with the recent discoveries aimed at balancing its energy import bill.
