Vår Energi has announced first oil from the Jotun floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit in the North Sea. The start-up of the vessel is part of Vår Energi's efforts to extend the life of the Balder field.
The project was first announced in 2020, with Vår Energi planning to extend Balder's operational life beyond 2045. The Jotun FPSO has been upgraded and repositioned specifically for this initiative. It is calculated to increase the field's total production by approximately 80,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).
In addition to the FPSO achieving first oil, all planned production wells (13) and one water injection well have been drilled. According to the operator, they will be brought onstream during the project's ramp-up period to reach peak production.
