Genesis is pleased to announce the recent successful completion of the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (Pre-FEED) study for the Stanlow Methanol-to-Jet (MtJ) project in the United Kingdom (UK), delivered in partnership with Essar Energy Transition.

The planned facility will convert approximately 550,000 tonnes of renewable e-methanol and bio-methanol into more than 200,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually, positioning it as one of the UK’s largest advanced SAF production hubs. Integrated within the Stanlow refinery’s existing infrastructure, the facility will enable on-site blending of SAF with conventional jet fuel and direct distribution to the UK aviation sector via established pipeline, road and marine networks.

The Pre-FEED study, completed in March 2026 on time and on budget, included comprehensive technical and commercial evaluations of the project, addressing critical aspects such as site selection, MtJ technology readiness, integration with refinery facilities, carbon intensity performance, and environmental compliance. The study reconfirmed the Stanlow MtJ project as a viable large-scale SAF opportunity.

Genesis’ scope covered facilities and terminal studies, as well as cost estimation—ensuring a robust and actionable foundation for the next phase of development. The work demonstrated that the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex is well-positioned to host the facility, with no material barriers to permitting and meaningful opportunities to reduce cost and carbon intensity through integration with existing assets.

Genesis worked collaboratively with the Essar Energy Transition project team and alongside MtJ technology providers and specialist partners throughout the study. Our approach focused on developing a comprehensive Class 4 design package aligned with the company's objectives, while maximising the use of Stanlow’s existing infrastructure for methanol import, storage, handling and SAF export.

The successful completion of the Pre-FEED enables Essar Energy Transition to advance the project into the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase and pursue participation in the UK’s SAF Revenue Certainty Mechanism (RCM) process, supporting long-term deployment of SAF production capacity.
