About this event

The EIC is happy to announce the Breakfast in Rio: Low Carbon Opportunities with Eletrobras and Acelen

Eletrobras is a key player in Brazil's energy sector, driving the global energy transition with one of the cleanest electricity matrices worldwide. Approximately 96% of its installed capacity comes from low-carbon sources, primarily hydropower (94.6%). Committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, the company completed the divestment of its coal and natural gas thermal assets in 2024.

In green hydrogen development, Eletrobras has been studying various projects and was responsible for the Itumbiara-GO plant as part of an R&D project. This was the first plant to become operational in Brazil and also the first to be certified by CCEE, verifying the origin of its production from low-carbon emission sources.

Acelen was founded and established by Mubadala Capital, and in December 2021, Acelen acquired the Landulpho Alves refinery (RLAM) in Bahia, now known as the Mataripe Refinery, previously operated by Petrobras. Since then, Acelen has been making significant strides in Brazil’s energy transition with various renewable energy projects.

The company is developing a biofuel plant at the Mataripe Refinery in Bahia with an estimated investment of US$3bn, aimed at producing 1 billion litres per year of green diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived from macaúba, a native Brazilian plant. The facility will have a production capacity of 20,000 barrels per day, equivalent to supplying 1.1 million vehicles annually.

To support the cultivation of macaúba, Acelen is developing the Acelen Agripark in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. This agricultural technology and innovation centre aims to domesticate macaúba for large-scale cultivation, using degraded land and avoiding competition with other crops. The project is being developed in partnership with over 20 research institutions, including Embrapa and the University of São Paulo (Esalq/USP).

The biofuel project, included in the Federal Government’s Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC), is expected to generate US$16bn in economic activity, and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% by replacing fossil fuels. Initially, the production of green diesel and SAF will be geared towards international markets, where these products are already approved for commercialisation and consumption.
