About this event
EIC is pleased to announce the Minas Gerais Breakfast: Automation & Energy Opportunities with Actemium, Acelen and Gasmig.
Acelen is a Brazilian energy company established in 2021 by Mubadala Capital. The company owns and operates the Mataripe Refinery, in Bahia, the second largest in Brazil, with a refining capacity of more than 300,000bbl/d. The Mubadala Capital group is also expanding its operations beyond conventional refining, entering the renewable fuels segment through Acelen Renováveis.
Acelen's flagship growth project is the development of a greenfield biorefinery in Bahia, which is expected to become one of the largest renewable fuels facilities in Latin America. In May 2026, the company secured US$1.5bn in financing to begin construction, structured by a consortium of ten national and international financial institutions led by HSBC and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). With operations due to start in 2029, the facility will have the capacity to produce 1 billion litres per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, using hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) technology. The wider project, representing a total investment of around US$3bn, forms part of Brazil's energy transition strategy and its ambition to become a leading global supplier of clean fuels.
Companhia de Gás de Minas Gerais (Gasmig) is a state-owned company controlled by Cemig and the exclusive distributor of piped natural gas across the state of Minas Gerais, with a current volume of around 3 million m³/d supplied to industries, commerce, fleets and the urban market. Beyond its gas infrastructure, the company offers a "solutions hub" that integrates the supply of compressed natural gas for vehicles (CNG) with renewable electricity from Cemig. Its strategy is to bring natural gas and biomethane to every region of Minas Gerais over the next five years, and it projects that demand could more than double as large consumers replace more polluting fuels as part of their decarbonisation efforts.
Gasmig's key growth project is the creation of a biomethane hub in the Triângulo Mineiro region, with estimated investments of R$1bn in approximately 400km of networks linking Uberaba, Uberlândia, Araxá and Indianópolis, and a target to contract up to 250,000m³/d of biomethane from a range of suppliers. The first concrete outcome came from the largest biomethane public tender ever held by the company, with the selection of GeoMit, a joint venture between Japan's Mitsui and Brazil's Geo Bio Gas & Carbon, in partnership with Companhia Mineira de Açúcar e Álcool (CMAA). The contract, signed in June 2026, provides for a plant in Uberaba with a capacity of 50,000m³/d, around 20% of projected demand, with operations beginning in May 2028. In parallel, the company is advancing anchor projects to expand its network into other regions, such as the Engeko Green consortium's thermal power plant in the north of Minas Gerais and a trunk line between Bragança Paulista (São Paulo) and Extrema (Minas Gerais), dependent on Nova Transportadora do Sudeste (NTS), to reach the industrial hub of Pouso Alegre in the south.
