About this event
Senegal has the potential to become a major oil and gas exporter due to several recent discoveries.
After over 140 exploration wells with limited success, Cairn Energy’s FAN-1 and SNE-1 wells in 2014 discovered significant hydrocarbon resources, with the SNE field having an estimated contingent resource of 561 million barrels.
Cairn’s success was shortly followed by Kosmos Energy in 2015, where multiple discoveries established the Greater Tortue Complex that has a P-mean gross resource estimate of 25 trillion cubic feet of gas. Although hydrocarbon production has been negligible, Senegal is tipped to become a petro-state due to its political stability and favourable investment climate. The president, a geologist and former director general of Senegal’s national oil company, was quick to show his support for the projects and is keen to work with both Cairn and Kosmos to develop the resources.
Challenges will need to be overcome to develop these fields as Senegal lack the infrastructure and capabilities required for the billion dollar projects. This provides opportunities for the UK supply chain, with extensive offshore experience, to offer their services to meet the future demand.
