The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the start of operations at the third unit of the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Burke County, Georgia. Along with Unit 4, still under construction, the plant will receive 2.2GW of new capacity from the new reactors.
Developer Southern Nuclear has recently concluded overall inspections and tests at Unit 3 and confirmed that, in accordance with NRC’s criteria, the beginning of activities will be safe.
Now, the company will be focused on fuel loading, operation tests and full start-up.
After commissioning is over, Unit 3 is planned to provide energy for a period of 60 to 80 years.
