British-Dutch energy giant Shell has announced it has started production of green hydrogen at its PEM hydrogen electrolyser in Germany.
The company claims the electrolyser at its Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland is the largest of its kind in Europe with a capacity of 10MW.
Renewable electricity will be converted at the site to produce up to 1,300 tonnes of green hydrogen each year.
Backed by European Commission funding through the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, and a consortium including ITM Power, research organisation SINTEF, and consultants Sphera and Element Energy.
Plans are underway to expand capacity of the electrolyser to 100MW in the future.
