The first turbine of the Alto Tâmega hydroelectric power plant in Portugal has been successfully connected to the grid, announced developer Iberdrola. The 160MW facility is part of a larger 1.16GW complex formed by three power plants on the Tâmega river.
The commissioning of the second and last turbine at Alto Tâmega is expected in March this year.
The Tâmega project requires a total investment of over US$1.6bn. Once fully commissioned, it will have an energy reserve of 50 million kWh, enough to meet the demands of 11 million people in 24 hours.
The complex is also includes the Gouvães pumping hydroelectric plant (880MW) and the Daivões hydropower plant (118MW), both operational since 2022.
