An agreement between the Belgium government and Engie has been signed regarding an extension project for two of the country’s nuclear power plant. The Doel 4 and Tihange 3 reactors will have its life extended by 10 years.
Both Doel 4 and Tihange 3, in activity since 1985, were under a schedule to close in two years, but will now be brought back into operation in November 2026. Combined, the facilities have a capacity of 2GW, 35% of Belgium’s total power generated from nuclear.
The deal represents a change in the country, which had previously decided to abandon nuclear power in 2025.
