French company Engie has signed a letter of intent with the Belgian government for the 10-year lifetime extension of two nuclear power plants in the country, Doel 4 and Tihange 3. Together, they account for approximately 2GW of capacity.
A definitive, binding agreement will be reached late this year.
Plans, which will still go through regulatory assessment, are to resume operations at both the facilities in November 2026.
Belgium had previously decided to end nuclear power generation by 2025. However, the impacts of the war in Ukraine on Russian gas supply to Europe has motivated the government to review this decision.
