The sixth and last reactor unit of the 6.7GW Hongyanhe nuclear power plant has entered operations. This is now the largest nuclear facility of China, being the first of the north-eastern part of the country, in the Liaoning province.
After being connected to the grid earlier this year in May, Unit 6 went through a trial phase of 168 hours before officially starting production.
The Hongyanhe project involved the installation of six CPR-1000 pressurised water reactors (PWRs), each with a capacity of 1.08GW. Its annual generation is expected to reach 45 billion kWh.
With the completion Hongyanhe, China General Nuclear Power, which holds a 45% stake in the facility, now has 26 nuclear power plants in its operational portfolio.
