Equinor disclosed today that Hammerfest LNG in Melk Island, Norway, has restarted LNG production. In its statement, the company informed that the first LNG is now on tank at Melkøya.
The start-up comes after a long restoration process at the plant, which was necessary after a fire in September 2020. The facility was closed since then.
The amount of LNG produced in Hammerfest is equivalent to 5% of Norway’s entire gas export. The plant has a nominal processing capacity of 6.5bn cubic metres per day.
Hammerfest LNG processes natural gas delivered from the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea. Its first start-up took place in 2007.
Besides Equinor, the project’s operator, Neptune Energy, Petoro, TotalEnergies and Wintershall Dea are also involved in the initiative.
