Owned by Intermountain Power Agency (IPA) and operated by the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water (LADWP), the coal-fired Intermountain power plant in Utah is under plans of decommission. With 1800MW of current capacity, the facility will be turned into a new energy hub.
Intermountain is schedule to cease its coal generation activities by 2025. After that, IPA wants the plant’s site to become a centre for natural gas generation and hydrogen production via electrolysis powered by renewables.
Among the many changes proposed by the IPP Renewed project, the installation of a Mitsubishi Power 840MW combined cycle power plant (which can also be fuelled with hydrogen) is considered, as well as hydrogen storage in underground salt caverns and revamp of Intermountain’s transmission system.
