ExxonMobil and its partners have made a new oil discovery in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana at Whiptail. The Whiptail-1 well, which is being drilled using the Stena DrillMAX rig, has encountered 246ft of net pay in high-quality oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs.
With an area coverage of 6.6m acres (26,800km2), the Stabroek block is being operated by ExxonMobil affiliate Esso Exploration and Production Guyana. The other partners in the block are Hess Guyana Exploration and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China’s CNOOC.
Oil was also found in the Whiptail-2 well, which is located 3 miles (4.8km) northeast of Whiptail-1, and is currently being drilled in 6,217 feet of water by the Noble Don Taylor.
The well has also encountered 167ft of net pay in high-quality, oil-bearing sandstone reservoirs.
The Whiptail discovery is located approximately 4 miles (6.4km) southeast of the Uaru-1 discovery, which was announced in January 2020, and three miles west of the Yellowtail field.
ExxonMobil expects at least six projects online by 2027 and sees potential for up to 10 projects to develop its current recoverable resource base.
