A 450MW pumped storage hydroelectric power project has received approval from the Scottish Government to be built with a total investment of £550m.
The Red John project, led by UK-headquartered clean energy developer Intelligent Land Investments Group (ILI), will be located on the shores of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands.
Up to 700 direct and indirect jobs will be created to construct the facility, which is estimated to offset 45m tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime.
Once operational, water will be pumped from the loch to a storage pond located on top of a hill when there is an excess of energy in the grid.
When electricity demand is high, the water will flow back down through a hydro generator to produce electricity.
