The Ethiopian government has announced the beginning of construction works at the Gode oil refinery. The facility, worth an investment of approximately US$2.5bn, is being built by China's Golden Concord Group.
The refinery's construction process will be split into two phases, with the first of them reaching operations within the next two years.
Once complete, Gode is planned to have a production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes of fuel per year. It will receive crude oil and condensate from the Hilala fields in Ethiopia's Somali region.
The construction of the Gode oil refinery is part of a larger, US$30bn investment programme that also includes an airport and a nuclear power plant.
