In the next days, Ørsted will be decommissioning its last coal-fired combined heat and power plant, Esbjerg. Located in Denmark, the station's closure is part of Ørsted's efforts to have 99% of its power generation coming from green sources by 2025.
Esbjerg has consumed approximately 500,000 tonnes of coal per year. This amount is equivalent to yearly carbon emissions of 1.2 million tonnes.
Along with Esbjerg, Ørsted will also shut down coal-fired units at the Studstrup and Kyndby power stations. By the end of the year, the company expects to no longer use coal as a reserve fuel.
