Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) have broken ground on renewables projects in Azerbaijan. Combined, these solar and wind facilities have a total capacity of 1GW.
The developments are the 445MW Bilasuvar and 315MW Neftchala solar projects and the 240MW Absheron-Garadagh wind project.
According to Parviz Shahbazov, Azerbaijan's Minister of Energy, the three power plants will generate annually 2.3 billion kWh of electricity as well as avoid one million tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
The beginning of construction works comes after the signing of investment agreements on the three projects, which took place in October 2023.
