The UK'S National Grid and Denmark's Energinet have officially inaugurated Viking Link, an interconnector project that installed a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between the two countries.
After an investment of £1.8bn, this is the first that that the UK's and Denmark's transmission systems are connected. Viking Link, which has a capacity of 1.4GW, stretches from the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire to the Revsing substation in Jutland.
According to National Grid, the transmission line is the world's longest land and subsea interconnector to date, covering over 760km. It is expected to power up to 2.5 million homes in the UK and avoid 600,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
