Pattern Energy has contracted Hitachi Energy as supplier of high-voltage direct current (HDVC) for the SunZia project. Located in New Mexico, the SunZia wind farm will be connected to the grid of Arizona and Southern California.
The 3.5GW wind power plant will produce enough energy to meet the demands of 3 million people in the United States. Its HVDC component will run through 885km, being one of the longest transmission links for renewable energy in the world.
Construction of the transmission line, developed through a turnkey solution, will be carried out in association with Quanta.
SunZia’s substations should be ready by late 2025, before the commissioning phase of the wind farm starts in 2026.
