Wind Energy Asia 2020
About this event
Taiwan is considered the next major market for offshore wind development in East Asia, with a strong project pipeline of 5GW capacity to be established by 2025.Capacity auction results announced in April and June 2018 saw major global players such as Ørsted, Wpd, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Northland Power secure projects. The government is providing a strong incentive structure, awarding developers with a 20-year power purchase agreement and feed-in tariffs of US$199/MWh. A further 3 – 4GW of capacity are in planning between 2025-2030, indicating the Taiwanese government’s commitment to the offshore wind industry.
Taiwan’s offshore wind market offers opportunities for experienced European companies to apply their expertise and knowledge in offshore wind developments. The government envisions a strong domestic supply chain development, and major developers and contractors have already chosen to form local partnerships to enter the market. Taiwan is a likely platform for companies to expand into neighbouring East Asian markets such as Japan and South Korea, who are closely watching the country as a likely blueprint for future development.
Given its openness to foreign participation, strong project pipeline and political commitment, Taiwan’s offshore wind sector is an opportunity not be missed.
